Do you feel Safe?
“But you, Lord, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.” Psalm 3:3
I simply want to encourage us that no matter what we face in this life the truest form of safety is in the Lord our shield. I have really been reflecting on how in the last few years whatever illusion of safety we had has been totally shattered. We are seeing firsthand the present dangers of this world. We all feel it. The question in these times is are we safe? If so, where is safety?
David in Psalm 3 was running from his son Absalom. David, unfortunately, found himself constantly in conflict. The words that came out of his mouth were a true sign of what he truly believed. I really encourage you to read the whole Psalm but this particular verse says a lot.
David was literally saying God was his protection at the time of the attack. We get that but the phrase “my glory” was really significant in this passage. The word glory in the original language is often used for a person’s reputation or significance, sometimes translated as “honor”. It’s alluding to David saying that his significance and honor were linked to his relationship with God rather than his own strength. I never really linked identity and safety before but they really do play with each other when we feel in danger or threat.
We belong to the Lord and he takes care of his children. Later in the Psalm David even declares that he can lie down and sleep in peace because he knew the Lord was with him. I love you each and praying with you even now that you will have that type of confidence in the Lord our God. Pray for me too. I desire that even more and definitely as this world continues to be as it is. If you get a chance listen to a song by Naomi Raine entitled “Safe”.
Until next time
